Hot Water Heater FAQ

We've compiled some of our more frequently asked questions about water heaters. If you've got a question, we have the answer. We're here to help!

WHY DO I KEEP RUNNING OUT OF HOT WATER?

There are many possible reasons that you aren't getting enough hot water. It could be that your water heater is too small for your household. If you are using more hot water than your tank can hold, it won't be able to keep up with your demand. A larger capacity model can help solve this problem. It is also possible that you have low gas pressure, or that you simply need to increase the temperature on your thermostat. Be careful if you try this! Burns and scalding are possible if you raise the temperature too much. Lastly, it is also possible that lime and/or sediment had built-up in your tank. Having your tank drained and cleaned to remove this build-up can help.

WHY DOES IT TAKE FOREVER FOR THE WATER TO REHEAT?

Again, these causes may the the same as why you are running out of hot water in the first place. it is possible you are having this problem because your hot water heater is too small and you need a bigger water heater, or the temperature on your thermostat needs to be adjusted. Having sediment in the tank removed may also help.

WHAT IF MY PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE LEAKING?

If your valve has failed and needs replacement, then you're in the right place. Give us a call or schedule service online. Other causes of this may be that your thermostat is set too high (try turning it down) or your water pressure level is too high (a pressure-reducing valve in the supply line can help).

I THINK MY DRAIN VALVE IS LEAKING?

The valves on many water heaters are not the highest quality available. Because of this it can be difficult to close it tightly. Try turning it with pliers, but be very careful not to apply so much force that you snap off the valve. It also may be that the valve has failed and needs replacement.

HOW MANY YEARS DOES A HOT WATER HEATER LAST?

The average hot water heater lasts over 10 years, but we advise that you start shopping, planning and saving for a new one around the 7 year mark. This gives you time to make the best decision for your household usage and budget.

CAN I DO ANYTHING TO EXTEND THE LIFE OF MY HOT WATER HEATER?

Keep the thermostat at no more than 115°F. Your water will still be hot enough for most everyday uses, and it may add a few years of use to your hot water heater by not overtaxing it. Again, lime and sediment can reduce the efficiency of your hot water heater, so it's important that this is removed from the tank on a regular basis. Be sure that you follow the manufacturer's recommendations for your specific water tank. Give us a call or schedule your regular maintenance service online.
